What can Hyundai’s next-generation hybrid system offer us?

Hyundai’s new-generation Palisade is positioning itself as “the best imported hybrid SUV under 500,000 yuan.” Behind this claim lies Hyundai’s substantial investment in hybrid technology. As consumers, do we have reason to pay for Hyundai’s new hybrid technology?

Compared to traditional hybrid technology, Hyundai has introduced a new motor architecture that achieves a superior balance of overall system performance and efficiency. While conventional hybrid systems employ a P0+P2 motor configuration, the new system utilizes a P1 motor directly coupled to the engine. This enhances system responsiveness while eliminating energy losses associated with traditional belt-driven systems.

The new architecture employs a P1+P2 motor layout, with the P2 motor handling both independent drive and regenerative braking functions. The direct-drive effect of the P1 motor enables pure electric mode operation across the entire speed range, supporting multiple energy flow modes including series, parallel, and hybrid configurations. This new architecture delivers structural changes, achieving high integration and a unified system design. More precise distribution of driving force between the engine and motors enhances overall fuel economy.
Compared to the traditional 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine, the new hybrid system delivers significantly more powerful performance, with a maximum output of 334 horsepower and peak torque of 460 Newton-meters. Hyundai’s 2.5-liter turbocharged engine features a compression ratio increased to 12.0. Its delayed intake valve closure strategy allows partial mixed gas recirculation, effectively lowering the compression ratio while maintaining the expansion ratio to achieve an “over-expansion cycle.”
The engine-motor coordination settings have also been optimized. Known as “Road Leveling” technology, this system dynamically allocates torque between the engine and motor, improving power delivery while enhancing fuel efficiency.

The new transmission features a redesigned structure with a dual-row damping disc configuration that absorbs a broader range of engine vibrations and reduces transmission shock. An integrated electric oil pump employs a new high-efficiency impeller design to lower drive power consumption. The monocoque rear housing shortens the transmission length by 20 millimeters while reducing weight and enhancing rigidity, enabling compatibility with a wider range of vehicle models. Additionally, the transmission’s allowable torque capacity has increased by 25%.
Hyundai has developed a “Parking Mode” that offers an electric vehicle-like experience, now featured in the new-generation Palisade. When parked, the vehicle operates solely on power from its high-voltage battery without starting the engine, enabling use of air conditioning, seat heating, and the infotainment system—though limited to one hour. Additionally, the Smart Reservation feature automatically charges the battery to 70–80% capacity before navigating to the destination.

Overall, Hyundai’s independently developed new hybrid technology maximizes the complementary advantages of traditional internal combustion engines and electric drive systems. It delivers certain driving experiences associated with electric vehicles while retaining the performance characteristics of gasoline-powered cars. At this stage, it demonstrates broad adaptability in the consumer market and offers a relatively moderate economic burden for consumers.
